Welcome to the cruising world. Buying your first boat means you have taken the first step to travel and discover the other two-thirds of the earth’s surface covered in water

There are a few things you should keep in mind while deciding on a boat/yacht

Purpose of the purchase

Millions of boats out there are based ondifferent needs. Your first step is to decide what type of boat suits your needs, and what you intend to use it for Small cruisers are great for lakes, not so great for crossing the Atlantic. A fishing boat will not have the style and power for waterskiing. Each category has different models that vary in size, engine and amenities. Pay attention to the details.

How much do you want to spend?

The capacity and size of the boat is an important decision you need to make when looking to buy a boat/yacht, the number of rooms and amenities will be based on the number of passengers as well as the intend of use. Make sure any boat you invest in is certified to carry all the passengers you plan to take aboard.

There is more to the price of a boat than just the purchase price, once you know what type of boat you want and have some idea on the model and size, talk to your insurance company and get a quote for coverage. Are you going to place it in a marina? Figure in docking fees.  Investigate typical maintenance and repair fees for the model you are looking at and be sure to include engine or boiler replacements and exterior painting and cleaning – two major costs likely to occur every 5 to 7 years.  Make sure those costs are all within your budget.
Although it may seem complicated, it really isn’t. So you should weigh your options thoroughly Talk to as many dealers as you can. Attend boat shows. Know how to buy a boat, and take all the options for a test drive. If you do, there are more chances you will buy the right boat at the right price and enjoy your new lifestyle for years to come.
