Register as a Marine Surveyors on AdamSea.com

Marine surveyors as well as appraisers specialize in marine assets and are unlicensed by the state and federal governments. There is no prerequisite by statute or regulation that practitioners of either profession attain licensure before practicing their craft. Both professions include professional associations that accredit / certify members.

The Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors (SAMS) & National Association of Marine Surveyors (NAMS) are the two major marine surveyor associations which offer certification / accreditation. NAMS has a sole conflict of interest limitation thus a SAMS surveyor can exclusively carry out pre-purchase surveys.

NAMS and SAMS necessitate formal coursework or training to become certified and rely on the prior education, experience and training of the individual. 5 years of experience as a surveyor is mandatory in both associations after which the prospective member must pass a written test.

SAMS requires a minimum number of 60 continuing education units every 5 years while NAMS requires 24 after every two years.

The American Society of Appraisers (ASA) is the sole specialized association which offers accreditation in marine survey specific appraisal. ASA necessitates 5 years of appraisal experience and further requires the attainment of four area specific courses of 30 hours each. The courses comprise comprehensive instruction plus testing on the three appraisal approaches namely the Cost Approach, the Market (sales) Approach and the Income Approach.

ASA specifies that an individual must necessarily take the updated Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) on one occasion every five years. Reaccreditation is required by ASA once per a five-year period by submitting not less than 100 hours of continuing education units.

Either a SAMS accredited or NAMS certified marine surveyor may have the experience, background and training to conduct an appraisal with the Market Approach. If the property being appraised is atypical it may be worth your while to avail the services of an Accredited Senior Appraiser. These Appraisers have the training, education and experience to generate an accurate appraisal report which will defy scrutiny (i.e. litigation, IRS audit, etc.).

At present there are seven ASA accredited yacht marine surveyors and ten ASA accredited commercial marine surveyors in the country.
